Swansea Community Woodlands Initiative (SCWI)

The Swansea Community Woodlands Initiative (SCWI) is coming to a close after helping to develop exciting and innovative woodland projects all across Swansea. The initiative was grant funded through Cydcoed, - Woodlands for all, the £18 million Forestry Commission Wales programme, funded by the EU (Objective One) and the Welsh Assembly Government.

SCWI worked to improve community participation in woodlands through woodland management, access, education, crafts, events and interpretation. The project was a partnership between The City and County Of Swansea, The Environment Centre and the Swansea Biodiversity Partnership.

The 18 council owned woodlands that benefited from this project were Ashlands, Craigfelin, Garth Farm, Glyncollen Quarry, Leadfield, Llewellyn Park, Crymlyn Quarry, Trallwn Woods, Lower Swansea Valley, Penlan Slopes, Sketty Park, Hendrefoilan Woods, Dunvant Brickworks, Killay Marsh, Bishops Wood, Hillside Wildlife Corridor & Rosehill Quarry, Tycoch Valley and Cwmllwyd Wood.

Events: There were a wide range of community events, including:

Santa Stroll & Community Xmas Tree Giveaway - Local volunteers, schools, and the general public attended the event which was a big success with over 100 people turning out. The event comprised of a stroll around the site explaining the local improvements, bird box making and a Xmas tree giveaway of small trees cut during the improvement works.

Youth Action Day Green Blitz Event Craigfelin - Over 80 young people and 10 adults attended the event. They cleared paths, litter picked, repaired seating areas and made bird boxes. The event was followed by locally made cawl. A partnership event with Craigfelin Junior school, Clydach development trust and local parents.

The Leadfield Community Event - The event was a great success and received lots of positive coverage. There was a very good turnout of local people. Lots of things were on offer for people to do from woodland crafts to environmental art to enjoying the local choir sing welsh classic songs. A site leaflet was designed and a first edition produced. This was a great start to a now ongoing project.

Dunvant Fairtrade Easter Egg Hunt - Local school children from Dunvant were given a guided walk and talk about the history and environmental importance of the site. After learning about local history and the range of tres and wildlife on the site the children ran free in search of the easter bunny eggs hidden in the woods. Later they had a go at willow weaving nests for their eggs to take home.

Better Signage & Information: New information panels will also be installed at Dunvant Brickworks and Cymllwyd Local Nature Reserve and new woodland signs are being put up at the entrance to each of the 18 woodlands that were part of SCWI.

Woodlands On Your Doorstep: This new booklet has been produced to help publicise what wonderful local woodlands we have and all the marvellous work that has been going on in them over the last year through the Cydcoed grant scheme. The woodlands featured are all open to the public, why not visit them this spring?.

The free booklet will be available shortly from various venues, including the Environment Centre.

ECO-ZONE 2008

At Swansea Show, Singleton Park

Sunday 25th & Monday 26th May

The Eco-zone has been a part of Swansea Show for over ten years now. Always offering plenty to see and do, it has become one of the most popular attractions in the event. The aim is to encourage everyone to get involved in creating a better environment and a positive future for our planet.

Swansea Environmental Education Forum (SEEF) brings together dozens of local environmental organisations and community groups within one marquee to show what is already being done right across Swansea and provide information and ideas to help us all do our bit in our homes, workplaces and communities.

A special theme in this year’s Eco-zone will be farming and gardening, with some very special visitors from Swansea Community Farm taking centre stage. There will be demonstrations of organic gardening, composting and country crafts and everyone is invited to have a go with a variety of hands-on activities. As part of the BBC’s Do One Thing campaign, visitors will be invited to sow wildflower seeds or make a bird feeder.

Sustainable Swansea will be presenting a range of local projects that are making a positive difference towards a more sustainable Swansea and will also be showing off their new interactive Green Map website. This will include a world’s first – the Swansea Green Map of Faiths and Spirituality – developed by Interfaith Swansea. A temporary cinema will be screening short films about local community projects and environmental issues.

Following the tremendous success of the Environment Centre’s annual Green Fayres, we are pleased to announce that the Eco-zone marquee will host a fantastic green market place offering visitors the opportunity to buy various green products and support local environmental groups. As always, the Environment Centre will also be providing the Fairtrade Café, always a popular spot to sit down, enjoy a cuppa and soak up the atmosphere.

Swansea Show takes place in the beautiful surroundings of Singleton Park. The Eco-zone is co-ordinated by SEEF in partnership with the City and County of Swansea and the Environment Centre.
