Why the warm packs?
The warm packs are provided free to those who meet our criteria for vulnerability to cold, either due to health conditions and/or personal circumstances.
The main components of the pack, such as the radiator reflector, door brush seal, draught excluder tape, and letterbox draught excluder are particularly helpful in reducing heat loss in homes that are hard to keep warm due to draughty doors, windows, and letterboxes. They achieve this by sealing the gaps in the building’s fabric and by retaining or redirecting the heat back to the interior of the building.
The other components in the pack such as the LED bulbs, radiator key and timer plug are wonderful energy saving measures. The LED bulbs use considerably less amount of energy to work compared to incandescent and halogen bulbs. The radiator key is required to bleed radiators so that the radiators can remain efficiently operational. The timer plug is a handy device that help you to plan for and control the time of usage of an appliance.
When used together, all the components in a warm pack improve the energy efficiency of a home and pave way towards a warmer home with reduced heating bills.
Our journey so far…
Our clients get to choose the energy measures they need from the warm pack. So far, radiator reflectors have been the most sought out energy saving measure, followed by radiator keys and 1 or 2 LED bulbs. As part of our warm pack promotions, we’ve had the opportunity to spread awareness about measures like the radiator reflectors and timer plugs, which were quite new topics to a lot of people. Therefore, we’re seeing more requests for timer plugs, alongside door brush seals and letterbox draught excluders.
In Great Britain (GB), draught proofing doors, floors, and windows might save you about £85 annually. Draught-free homes are generally more pleasant at lower temperatures, making it possible for you to lower your thermostat. By lowering the thermostat from 22°C to 21°C, you can save £90 in GB annually, thereby saving even more money on your energy bills. (Source: Energy Saving Trust)
Each warm pack in total could give you annual savings of £107 on your energy bills, carbon savings of 227 kgCO2e, while helping you save £45 on upfront costs. (Numbers approximated based on data from Energy Saving Trust for a typical 3 bedroom house)
Things to consider
Some of the items like the radiator reflectors, door brush seals and window draught excluder tapes may need to be cut to be the right fit.
The instructions for proper installation are usually given on each product’s cover, either on the back or as a QR code on the front.
We currently don’t provide carry bags to take home the warm pack in, so if you’re eligible and looking to get a pack for yourself or someone in your household, it’s handy if you bring any large-sized shopping bag - especially, if you’re planning to get the longer door brush seal.
Please note that you will be asked to show evidence of health conditions (such as a prescription, medication package, treatment plan, GP or hospital appointment or referral letter) and of income or other circumstances during the assessment of eligibility.
To find out if you’re eligible, you can either visit our hub at the Environment Centre on Tuesdays - Fridays between 10 am - 3 pm or fill out the following form so we can get back to you:
We are a non-profit organisation, so resources are limited – so we thank you in advance for your patience when dealing with your enquiry.
