Transition Swansea
Introduction:
Transition Swansea is a grassroots initiative inspired by the Transition Town movement. Transition Towns is a positive way of preparing for a low-carbon future and lessening our dependence on oil. Ways in which this is done not only include energy efficiency, buying locally and consuming less. It also means sharing skills with one another, getting practical advice from the elderly about life before cheap oil and re-learning what it means to truly live in a community. The outcome of this will be a stronger community encouraging a more localised lifestyle, which will not only enable us to be more resilient in the face of climate change and peak oil but will improve the quality of all our lives.

Transition Swansea had its first public meeting in january 2008. There is a steering group of 11 people who have all volunteered to help guide the project through it's early stages. Since the first meeting several people have also taken the initiative and set up Transition-related projects. Some of these are:
- Community Tree Nursery - Providing trees for schools and community groups.
- Fruit Tree Grafting Day - workshop teaching the vital skill of fruit tree grafting.
- Market Saturday - event encouraging students to shop at Swansea indoor market.
- Transition Drinks - an informal meeting for people interested in the initiative.
- LIDS (Low Impact Development Swansea) - an existing group discussing the possibility of a low-impact housing group in Swansea.
The steering group is arranging the next big public meeting/event. This will include a film screening and short talks from representatives of other Transition Towns, and a question and answer session. We will post information about this event as soon as it becomes available.
