Swansea Environmental Education Forum
Fforum Addysg Yr Amgylchedd Abertawe
Higher & Further Education
The Higher and Further Education sub group was formed in 2000. Membership consists of Swansea Institute of Higher Education (SIHE), Swansea University (UCS), City&County of Swansea Sustainable Unit, Gorseinon College, Swansea College and other non-school education providers. There are formal and informal partnerships between these organisations improving sustainability e.g. the Swansea Bay Car Sharing Forum www.switchtoshare.com As well as a joint project between SIHE and UWS offering a module whereby students apply sustainability to their main subject job.
We meet on a termly basis and share good practice on greening the curriculum and the organisation. We have produced a directory of all the Sustainable courses in Swansea and have run a national conference on Sustainable Education in Higher Education, which was attended by Jane Davidson, Welsh assembly member for Education and Professors David Herbert and David Warner. There are a lot of courses with sustainability in them ranging from half a day to post grad courses.
Environment Week
Environment Week is an annual event, which sees students from Swansea Institute of Higher Education and students from Swansea University bicycle their way along Swansea sea front from the University campus to the Environment Centre. Was it worth it? Certainly was to have a delicious breakfast at the Environment Centre!
Students and staff also go on visits and tasks such as this trip to spot porpoises off a local peninsula.
